David Ogilvy's 12 Steps to Creating Ads

Topics

At the age of 38, David Ogilvy was unemployed. 💼🔝 In just 3 years, he became the best copywriter in the world. 🚀🏆 Today, he is an icon of Advertising. 👑 He himself explains you his method in 12 steps: #DavidOgilvy #Copywriting #PublicidadGenial

  1. 🏠 I've never written an ad in the office. Lots of interruptions. I write everything at home. #TWorkAtHome
  2. 📚 I spend a lot of time studying precedent. I look at all the competitor's ads from the last 20 years. 1TP5Research
  3. 🧠 I'm nothing without research material - and the more "motivational" the better. #Data
  4. 📝 I write a definition of the problem and the objective I want the campaign to achieve. 1TP5Clear Objectives
  5. 💡 Before writing the text, I write down all the data and sales ideas I can think of. Then I organize them and relate them to the research. #Ideas
  6. 📰 Then I write the headline. In fact, I try to write 20 alternative headlines. And I never select the final headline without asking my colleagues for opinions. #THeadlines
  7. 😬 At that point, I can't put off writing copy anymore. So I go home and sit at my desk. I find myself out of ideas. I get in a bad mood. #ECreativeWriting
  8. 😨 I dread the thought of producing a lousy ad. This causes me to scrap the first 20 attempts. #Perfectionism
  9. 🍹 If all else fails, I drink half a bottle of rum and play Händel music on the gramophone. This usually produces an uncontrollable stream of text. #Inspiration
  10. 🌅 The next day I get up and edit the stream. #Edition
  11. 🚆 Then I take the train to New York and my secretary writes a draft. (I don't know how to type, which is a big drawback). #TTTeamwork
  12. ✍️ I'm a lousy copywriter, but I'm a great editor. So I start editing my own draft. After 4 or 5 edits, I show it to the client. #EProfessionalEditing
